One of the newer scams going around the internet these days is the “UNICEF” scam.  This is just a new type of romance scam.  It is recently popular in Africa, especially Ghana.  The scammer meets sincere persons on dating sites by creating dozens of Careful of Online Scamsfake profiles at many dating sites (often copied profiles and stolen pictures) and claims to be a RN (registered nurse) or other type of UNICEF worker.

Then, after developing an online “relationship” the scammer asks for funding, either because he/she lost her passport, or need money to get an educational certificate, or for a plane ticket, etc, etc.

In short, the whole story about UNICEF (or any other organization) is a cover and in fact nobody was ever born in the USA/Philippines/Russia/France.  These are simply African scammers creating a story to trick honest people into sending them money.

Never send money to someone you met online but have not met in person.  If you ever meet someone with this story on our site, or any story that seems similar, contact us immediately.  If you meet someone from a different site with a story like this, you are still welcome to post your experience in the comments for this blog to help others avoid falling into these kinds of traps.

Here is an example UNICEF profile that we suspended from our site:

Personal Details

Age: 32
Gender: Woman
Location: Makati, Manila, Philippines
About myself: I am looking for a man who truly wants to find a good woman to place in his life for a meaningful relationship which could lead to marriage. There is nothing more precious than being with the person you love and having a family to call your own, and having someone to love you and care for you. Are you looking for a wonderful, spirit-filled Christian Lady? Well i am a Registered Nurse (RNs) by Profession working under UNICEF as a Volunteer.I have been to so many country’s because of my Voluntary work with UNICEF.Have you been searching for the love of your life? Then, am the only good lady for you.Well I am however concerned with the mental maturity of the individual and the inner beauty My Man possess. I am looking for a man who truly wants to find a good woman to place in his life for a meaningful relationship which could lead to marriage. Isaiah 35:4 your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you.” that’s me for you. I want a man who can appreciate me for all that I am, treats me with respect and consideration,a man who will understands me even better than I understand myself, sometimes just looks at me with out words but knows what is going on.I want someone that I will miss when we are not together, and are looking forward to the next time we connect.

You can sometimes find profiles like that by searching for “unicef” at other dating sites if you would like to communicate with a scammer on your own (we do not recommend it!)

However, of course most of these scammers are not dumb enough to actually put UNICEF right in their profile because we would never allow them on the site.  So they simply copy another member profile, and only later let on about the “unicef” or other charitable project later in a personal message.

Here are some phrases from actual scammers that should clue you in to this kind of scam:

Thanks,I am gentle and romantic Lady with real principles. Honesty, trust and mutual respect are the pillars of my relationship and life philosophy. I like to play with open cards. No games, lies, tricks and double life.I want to have a strong relationship, My future partner must be a serious , clever and responsible man who is able to love, respect and appreciate Woman as a personality, who is able for sincere , loving and tender feelings, who is able for honesty and devotion towards beloved Woman.I have been to so many Country’s because of my work with UNICEF.I was in TN and FL for a Medical program and Research on health care for the Orphans and Valuable Kids,i really love it in West Africa right now for my last volunteer work which would be ending Early next Month.Take care and looking forward to hear from you soon if you are intrested in moving this relationship forward by knowing everything about each other.( rich2loveu1 at yh dot com. 9. right at this moment, this girl by the name ‘Heline Lance’ (from http www shaadi com)
from ‘holland’ is trying to scam me as well. her folks are living in Austin,TX and she happens to be dutch, just finished training in London,UK, and now in S Africa. The moment she told me she is in Africa, I knew she is scamster. Be aware folks, these jackals are everywhere.

What a shame and what a sham !!

    Comment by Vic — August 26, 2012 @ 6:52 pm

  10. Hi Vic, Sorry to hear that. Certainly sounds like a scam. Most likely the person has no connection to Holland, London, or Austin, TX. Might not even be in South Africa. For some reason these kinds of scams are becoming popular in Africa, I guess because the story sounds believable enough to many people. Yet it’s just one lie after the other. I’m glad you found our blog and won’t be continuing any correspondence with that scammer.

    Comment by Bob — September 5, 2012 @ 4:51 am

  12. I have been approached by girl calling herself Heline Lance, about whom you already know. She came on to me at such an incredible pace I knew it had to be dishonest and when she said she was Dutch I called her bluff as I speak Dutch quitge fluently. She kept on but changed the subject very rapidly and did not reply to what I had written. I have a photograph which purports to be of her. I have told her to go away.

  20. This scam is also in spanish so the sophistication, the translation is pretty good. Can you send a dollar to waste their time? Or so it can be tracked? Is’nt there a way to fight back. They are cutting and pasting so I am too. Having some fun with it now. Just takes a couple of seconds to cut an paste. Here is a piece

  21. I had a nice chat with a scammer a few days before trying Christian Filipina, came off a site called mate1, and called them self Rose Mensah, at first glance everything looked ok, their story of why the were in ghana, a face book page, only thing is pretty much was trying to throw themselves at me over the net, well after texting on skype for a bit I simply called and took them by surprise , needless to say the guy trying to make a whiny pitched voice in the background didnt work, well that and all the while I was doing searches and one of the top google match was Rose Mensah ghana warning of a dating site scam. No mention of Unicef but still was ghana and ya skype gives tracking location of calls, something the scammers didnt realize. would also say there are a lot of ways to Look up people qucikly on the web , good for detecting scammers but also means for safety you have got to watch any and all info you put out too or those same scammers( or worst someone wanting to do harm to you) can use it against you.

  22. Oh and just another tip, post in detail on any profile a few ways that you have no money and wont ever send anyone money, may just turn a few scammers away and less to deal with.

    Comment by Kat — October 31, 2012 @ 10:41 pm

  23. So I was on the site “flirt” and a girl that viewed my profile sent me her email address . She was very attractive , so of course I mailed her . We emailed about a week and we exchanged all kind of stories. Finally she mentioned the food there was making her sick . She said she didn’t get paid until after her tour and needed a loan to by her own food and some medical expenses . She wanted me to wire it to her “Doctor” there in Nigeria and he would take care of it . The sad part is I’ve truly fallen in love with the pics of her…whoever she is ! I have a pic of her in her UNICEF uniform . Is there any way to find out who she really is ? Just want to let her know someone is using her pics for fraud and maybe get a little closure. Forgot to mention she claims to be Kimberly Jackson from Portland,Oregon and is 26 years old .

    Comment by Michael Messner — November 24, 2012 @ 6:35 pm

  24. Hi Michael, Sorry to hear about that. If you really wanted to, you could probably find the person. First thing to check might be to see if there is a match. On the other hand, the best for your soul might be to just let go of it and promise yourself not to make the same mistake again.

  33. Hi Jinny, Meeting someone on tagged, facebook, myspace, or even on our site does not mean you have met in person. We don’t know what you mean by “dated” but one thing we do know is just don’t give money to people you don’t know well. And definitely don’t if you have to borrow the money!

    Comment by Brendan — December 24, 2012 @ 5:54 am

  35. Hi Brendan, Probably a scam like you say. It might not even be a girl, but rather some guy in Nigeria, Ivory Coast, or Ghana, posing as a girl for you.

    Comment by Christian Filipina — December 24, 2012 @ 9:50 am

  36. Hey. I just want to agree with comment #23. I too met a girl on Flirt claiming to be Kimberly Jackson. I have about 33 photos of her and a few are the real thing. I requested something specific from her. Nothing lewd or sexy. She looked just like her pics that she sent me. I was able to verify thru another website that the very first 10 or 12 emails she sent me were verbatim from what I read about another scammer. Only the names were changed. I hear you Michael Messner. I too fell in love with her pics. We can all see her pics on Her face is plastered all over the home page. I have variations of the pics on the page that she sent me. I must admit I got duped by her for more than I care to admit to. I was so hoping she would turn out to be real. She ain’t. My closest friend said I’m not one to get hustled very easily. I’ve got a pretty good BS detector. But she gave me just enough info to satisfy me. Any pics a girl from overseas or from a dating site should be checked with I know now. Won’t get fooled again.

The first email from www idate4you com was really presented nicely but seeing as I am a writer if you were to speak this letter out loud you could hear someone with an accent saying it also things like the use of cos as opposed to because seem to be a common theme. I spent a lot of time abroad which has taught me that people tend to speak and write in broken English when it is not their first language, anyone else get an Daniela Garcia?

“Am really sorry about the lost of your mom do accept my sympathy and i do appreciate all you have to tell me about you well I just came back from work and was thinking of how nice it would have been if we got the opportunity to meet real soon……and i just came back from work just to check my mail if you’ve written me or something and i felt so did..and i came to notice i keep checking my mail more than regular since we started talking…and baby Well, let me tell you more about myself….I’m working as a nurse attached to UNICEF and presently i’m on a working trip…i would have loved meeting up with you real soon but as of now I’m currently with the UNICEF team on a mission to Western Part Of Africa and i’m gonna be with you next month .
